In the words of the great Chuck Thompson (long-time Baltimore Orioles announcer), “ain’t the beer cold!”. Boxing fans from every corner of the globe will undoubtedly be tuned in this Saturday night as two of the most skilled fighters in the world get it poppin’ at The Theatre at Madison Square Garden.
Vasyl “Hi-Tech” Lomachenko (9-1, 7KO’s) and Guillermo “El Chacal” Rigondeaux (17-0, 11KO’s)have been playing “social media tag” for a couple of years, but upon receiving an imaginary call from Neil deGrasse Tyson, the stars have aligned to allow, what I consider, the premiere scrap of the year. Now hold on, I’m not gonna “Bert Sugar-ize” the moment and proclaim this to be the “fight of the 21st century”, but when you have two fighters of this caliber finally square-off for the WBO World Super Featherweight Title, it’s a fantastic look for the sport of boxing. You know it’s a big deal when other top fighters acknowledge the brilliance of the participants.
Interestingly enough, the super featherweight division has never been a stranger to dynamic fighters. For you fans who are just getting into the sport, this division has produced some of the best to ever do it. From Kid Chocolate, Manny Pacquiao, Alexis Arguello, Floyd Mayweather and Julio Cesar Chavez…are you pickin’ up what I’m puttin’ down?
I don’t want to tranquilize you with fight analysis and the ever-present “compubox” stats, but for hardcore fight fans or ladies who are trying to impress their man with some impromptu boxing talk, you don’t want to miss this fight.
Oh, by the way, ESPN I don’t know what the over-under is on you botching the coverage, but you would be wise to not make the viewers channel-surf for one of the biggest fights of the year. Feel free to leave your comment or prediction below. #ChillinWithCheese
